Cellular Automata Models of Lava Flow
at the East Pacific Rise
I am currently working to develop cellular automata models of submarine lava
flows in order to understand a recent eruption on the East Pacific Rise. More
details to come ...
Animation
The animation below shows results from a cellular automata model that simulates the
flow of lava within the axial summit trough near 9° 50' N on the East Pacific
Rise. Currently this simulation is based on the model of Miyamoto and Sasaki (1997),
which was developed for subaerial lava flows. I am now working to incorporate a
cooling model that will make this model valid for submarine flows.
